Your Wedding Stationery and Calligraphy Questions: Answered By The Expert
One of our favorite aspects of weddings (besides the dress, of course) is all the personal touches and details our brides include in their wedding day. Incorporating custom stationery and signage in your wedding day is a simple way to elevate your guests’ experience at your event. We sat down with Denver stationery and calligraphy artist, Amy Zhang, to learn more about what goes into stationery design and selection for our brides.
LWD: Tell us about you! How did you get into custom stationery design?
Amy: My background is in graphic design, but I've always loved creating by hand as well, especially painting and lettering! I designed my first invitation for a portfolio show in college, and have been hooked ever since — I love seeing how a single piece of paper can take on so much personality!
LWD: What are the benefits of using a custom designer and calligrapher?
Amy: I think it's so special to have a design created especially for you! Everything single element becomes a reflection of you as a couple — from the colors, to the illustrations, to the stamps that go on the envelopes. Plus, they can become treasured keepsakes from your big day!
LWD: What should couples look for when searching for a wedding stationery artist?
Amy: Definitely take some time to look through their portfolio and their social media accounts. See what catches your eye! There are so many talented designers out there, and choosing one whose style matches yours will help the process go more smoothly.
LWD: What’s your favorite part of the wedding design process?
Amy: I love creating the custom elements that really bring out a couple's personality! Whether that's a specific color scheme, an original illustration, or a unique monogram — it's all about capturing a unique love story.
LWD: How far in advance of the wedding should couples start working with you to get their save the dates and invitations out?
Amy: Custom designs take time, so I recommend beginning the design process 2-3 months before you'd like to mail out your save the dates or invitations. It might even be better to reach out sooner, as designers can get booked out as well.
LWD: What’s your general price range?
Amy: A fully custom suite typically begins around $1,100-$1,300, depending on your guest count. Extras such as specialty printing (i.e. letterpress) and envelope calligraphy can be added for an additional fee.
LWD: Is there anything else you’d like couples to know?
Amy: When you're creating your stationery budget, don't forget about postage! It adds up, especially if your suite ends up weighing more due to add-ons like double thick paper, ribbon, wax seals, etc.
